The origin of the police department can be traced backed to 1663, when Hans Block set up a system of patrol in the Swedish settlement area of Philadelphia. In 1751, the first paid police agency, comprising wardens and constables, was founded by the General Assembly. Post 1850, the police force was strengthened and a police marshal was also appointed.
