Located in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania , Philadelphia is,the county's largest and most populous city. In colloquial language Philadelphia is also referred to as 'Philly' and its name signifies that it is 'The city of brotherly love'. Today Philadelphia stands out as a major center for commerce,culture as well as education in the US.
Philadelphia served as the capital of USA in the 18 th century and holds a very significant place in American history. It was the birthplace of the American Revolution and subsequently gave birth to American independence and also charted out its democracy. One of the earliest planned cities of US,this city,was founded by William Penn,a quaker by profession,in the year of 1682. One of the major philosophies which worked behind the city's construction is that,it would be a center for religious tolerance and brotherly love,and hence the city was named Philadelphia . During the American War of Independence the city gave rise to many eminent leaders. The Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution was drafted in the city's City Hall . However,British troops,colonized the city in the year 1777 and in 1790 the city became the seat of the US government. It served as the capital of USA until the year 1800.

In the 19 th century the city became a major railway hub with one of the largest steam locomotive companies being based here. With the setting up of a formal government,the city was divided into 5 administrative blocks;West Philadelphia ,South Philadelphia ,North Philadelphia ,North-east Philadelphia and Germantown. In 1926,the city's 150 th anniversary,the city underwent major expansions in all fields. The city underwent major revamping around the 1950's when its transport was developed to become one of the best. Skyscrapers began to outline the city's horizon around 1980. The tallest structures in the city till date are One and Two Liberty Place .
The climate of Philadelphia is largely sub-tropical,however,rainfall can be experienced throughout the year. Winters generally bring in some snow. In the field of culture Philadelphia is synonymous worldwide with its charming composition ' Philadelphia Soul '. Tourism also flourishes in the city,with Philadelphia, housing many significant historical sites. The economy of Philadelphia is quite strong,and is,heavily based on manufacturing,refining and food and financial services. It also has its independent Stock Exchange. The city is served by 2 major airports.
