Philadelphia Museum of Art


The Philadelphia Museum of Art is the third-largest museum in USA devoted to art and enjoys a prominent place in the cultural circuit of the city. Art lovers from all over the world visit the museum to enlighten themselves from its informative programs, famous collections and special exhibitions. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is situated at the end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

History of Philadelphia Museum of Art

One of the greatest attractions of the museum is the magnificent building itself, which was constructed by Minnesota dolomite. The Philadelphia Museum of Art was founded in 1876, exhibits items related to decorative arts. The museum expanded rapidly and new building was opened in 1928, which was in the form of three inter connected Greek temples. Julian Abele was the chief designer of the museum, who was also the first African-American graduate from the architecture school of University of Pennsylvania. The temples of Greece inspired him.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art in America features
work of art belonging to the Impressionist, Renaissance, American, and Modern period. Some of the masterpieces of the museum are Rogier van der Weyden altarpiece, exclusive works of Marcel Duchamp, a huge Bathers by Cezanne and a room dedicated to Philadelphia's Thomas Eakins.

After entering the museum, visitors will be mesmerized by the impressive staircase and statue of Diana made by Saint-Gaudens's. The John G. Johnson Collection and A. E. Gallatin collections are the permanent collections of Philadelphia Museum of Art. The John G. Johnson Collection exhibits various forms of Western art from the Renaissance period to the 19th Century. Modern and contemporary works are featured by the Arensberg and A. E. Gallatin collections, which exhibit the works of eminent artists like Matisse, Brancusi, Picasso and Braque. Art enthusiasts can view some of the famous paintings like Rubens's Prometheus Bound, Picasso's Three Musicians, Van Eyck's St. Francis receiving the Stigmata, Benjamin West's Benjamin Franklin Drawing Electricity from the Sky, Van Gogh's Sunflowers and Cézanne's The Large Bathers.
