The 146-year-old tavern has an interesting history behind it. Originally it was named 'The Bell in Hand' and was situated in a small row house. The owner William McGillin lived upstairs with his 13 children. Laborers who frequented the tavern for drink and food called it McGillin's. Over the years, the tavern expanded and it was known widely by its nickname. McGillin's Old Ale House of Philadelphia changed hands from one owner to another within the family of the McGillin's.
