Independence Seaport Museum was opened in July 1995 on the waterfront of Philadelphia. For over 35 years it was known as the Philadelphia Maritime Museum. Situated on the Penn's Landing Waterfront, it offers splendid views of the waterfront at 211 South Columbus Boulevard and Walnut Street.
Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia is devoted to discover the nautical history of the Delaware River, the Bay and also its tributaries. The J. Welles Henderson Archives and Library of Independence Seaport Museum is among the principal maritime research centers of United States of America.
Daily the Museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm. On few holidays like New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day the Museum is closed. Every Sunday there is free admission between10 am-12 pm which is not applicable for groups. The museum can easily be accessed through car, bus, subway and train. Visitors can also avail the Delaware River Link Ferry and the boats of Penn's Landing Marina to reach the museum.

Seaport Museum are: What Floats Your Boat? Olympia: Launching, Philadelphia and the China Trade, Home Port Philadelphia, Divers of the Deep, Ship Via Philadelphia, On the Rivers, On the Shores: Small Craft of the Delaware River Valley, Bound For Philadelphia and Coming To America. The section ‘What Floats Your Boat?’ informs the visitors on the scientific aspect of boats and also emphasizes the historical and artistic facts related to boats. The different stage from construction to the actual sailing of the boats is shown vividly in this section. The Philadelphia and the China Trade section highlights on the sea trades of the city with China, which started in the second half of 18th century.
During severe weather the museum has the right to close ships. The Ships at Independence Seaport Museum cannot be accessed by handicapped. To educate children and enrich the knowledge of adults the museum organizes several student and adult programs.
