Founding of Philadelphia
The Lenape Indians inhabited the area of Philadelphia in earlier times. They occupied areas around the Delware Valley. First settlers in this region were the Dutch British and Swedish followed by the European settlers, who appeared during the 1600's. The founding of the city of Philadelphia in 1682 is credited to the noted Quaker, William Penn. As an eminent Quaker, Penn had dreamt of building a city where all the people regardless of religion could worship together. Later on, Penn was prosecuted. Though the early settlers lived in caves along the riverbank, the city began expanding with the new homes and prominent churches being built.
Growth of Philadelphia as a city
Going by the history of Philadelphia, its growth as a full-fledged city commenced rapidly during the 18th century. By 1701 the city population grew manifold, comprising of
the English, Welsh, Irish, Germans, Finns, Swedes and the African slaves. According to the Charter of 1701, issued by William Penn, Philadelphia acquired the status of a city. Philadelphia and the American Revolutionary War
American Revolutionary War was the gradual culmination of a civil war fought between the thirteen British colonies and the Kingdom of Great Britain. Events like Philadelphia Campaign, battle of Germantown and the First Troop Cavalry were significant in the American War of Independence. During the Philadelphia Campaign, General Howe and his strong troop of 15,000 soldiers captured the city, as the city was the base of the Revolutionary Government.
Philadelphia City in the 21st century
A complete makeover of the Philadelphia city took place in the late 19th century. The city attracted investments and its economy developed in leaps and bounds. Under the program of Philadelphia revitalization the less developed neighborhoods underwent a makeover. The whole idea was to present a completely new Philadelphia to the world, which was different from the old one. Today, the city is one of the most developed and modern cities in America and is a commercial center for trade and industry.
The diverse history of Philadelphia has influenced the American History in its broader aspect, as the city played a key role in the American War of Independence.
