The Philadelphia Flyer is a professional ice hockey team, with its base in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Flyer joined the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL), as a part of the expansion program of the NHL.

Among the three expansion hockey teams of the National Hockey League, Philadelphia Flyer became the first team to participate in the Stanley Cup, for two successive years in 1974 and 1975, reaching the finals. This is one of the major achievements for the Philadelphia Flyers. However, the Philadelphia Flyer is yet to win the Stanley Cup. Despite some failures, the Philadelphia Flyer is known to have the second best percentage after the Montreal Canadiens, in terms of the successes obtained so far, among all members of the National Hockey League.

Ever since its inception, the team has been playing a number of matches at the domestic level. The sporting venues where they played these games are at the Spectrum from 1967 till 1999 and at the Wachovia Center since 1996. Among the rival teams of Philadelphia Flyer, the New Jersey Devils is the most important one, with whom the Philadelphia Flyer contested heavily in all hockey matches since 1995. In fact, the Flyer was also successful once, in beating the New Jersey Devils in 2004.
