Central High School was established in the year 1838 and was the second public high school in America during that period of time. Since its establishment it has been consistently involved to become the best school in the nation and also hold a reputation of excellence.
The different subjects that are offered by the school from, which the children can choose from are Science, English, Social Studies, Art, Physical Education, Mathematics, World Languages, Computer Science, Music, ESOL and Health.
History of Central High School
The school was established in 1838 with 4 teachers and 63 students. From that small number the school has presently 2300 students and 110 teachers. The first building of Central High School was situated at the curve of Juniper and Market Sts., opposite City Hall. At present, the school is located on a small hill at the cross section of Ogontz and OlneyAvenues.
In 1849, the school was given the authority to bestow academic degrees to the graduates passing from the school by an Act of Assembly. Even today, the Central High School is the only high school in USA that has the authorization to grant a Bachelor of Arts college degree to its graduates instead of the ordinary high school

diplomas.
Originally, Central High School in Philadelphia started as a school meant only for the boys and it continued until August 1983. After the judgment of the federal Judge William M. Marutani that single-sex admissions policy followed by the school was unconstitutional, 6 female students were admitted in the senior section of Central High School. Presently, more than 50% of the students of the school are young women.
Facilities at Central High School
The school provides different types of facilities to the students studying there. For the overall development of a child, the school encourages children to participate in various types of extra-curricular activities. A number of students club related to several fields like academic, cultural, advocacy, media, arts and athletics are established. Anime Club, Fencing Club, Magic Card Club, Weight Club, RAC (Rogue Anime Club), Lyric, Robotics, Stage Crew, Game Central, Chess Club, GLSBA are some of the students club of Central High School. Recently a multi-million dollar library and research complex has been constructed in the campus of the school
