The American Swedish Historical Museum is the oldest Swedish museum in the entire country. In the American Swedish Historical Museum, Swedish-Americans, Swedes as well as people of several nationalities come together to appreciate the contributions made by Swedish people to architecture, history, music, art, science and technology.
American Swedish Historical Museum is situated in Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park, close to the sports complexes in South Philadelphia. The opening hours of American Swedish Historical Museum are 10 AM to 4 PM from Tuesday to Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, the museum is open from 12 PM to 4 PM. The museum is closed on national holidays, Mondays and on select Sundays. The admission charges of the museum range from $4.50 to $6.50. For children under 12, entry is absolutely free.
American Swedish Historical Museum was established in 1926, and it promotes as well as preserves Swedish-American and Swedish cultural traditions and heritage for approximately 80 years. The charming building of the museum was designed by John Nyden, a Swedish-American architect. cornerstone of the museum was placed by Gustav Adolf, the Swedish Crown Prince on June 2 in 1926. The construction of the building was completed in the next year.
Currently, the museum comprises 12 permanent galleries, a library and a changing exhibition gallery. 3 galleries of American Swedish Historical Museum are devoted completely to the historical past of the New Sweden Colony, that was founded in 1638, in the Delaware Valley. The other galleries displays various items on the contributions made by Swedish people such as John Ericsson, Fredrika Bremer, Jenny Lind and others. A gallery showcases various Nobel Prizes and is devoted to Alfred Nobel. The other collections of American Swedish Historical Museum are beautiful Swedish glass and artistic works by Carl Milles, Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn.
In the American Swedish Historical Museum Shop visitors can buy a variety of items, which range from candy to books, jewelry to Dala horses and from CDs to linen. The shop also has a good collection of Swedish Christmas decorations.
