Peoria has interesting Civil War History , plenty of native Americana and interesting locales . Local authorities have carried out extensive renovation of the old sites and newer attractions have been added. There are excellent State Parks in the region and comfortable places to stay and relax. The efforts have paid off and Peoria is a preferred Travel destination with about a million visitors every year.

Peoria offers interesting guided tour options. Take a trip down Illinois history in a replica prewar Riverboat called the Spirit of Peoria . Cruises last about an hour and a half with a narrated of history of Peoria . Visitors can also take the Peoria Trolley Tour which allows tourists to view the city's historic locations of interest like Averyville , Peoria Heights and see some of the grand residences on Grand View Drive on the Illinois Riverfront . The Peoria Historical Society provides an entertaining narration about the city's history, it's ethnic culture and the heritage buildings.

Lakeview Museum of Arts and Sciences is the biggest museum in it's category in Illinois. The exhibits emphasize local arts and crafts . It also has an impressive planetarium with the world' s largest scale model of the Solar System.

Wheels O'Time Museum displays Vintage Automobiles, Trains, Airplanes and Toys. There is a fantastic collection of Model trains and jukeboxes. There is also a miniature circus which draws many viewers.

  • At Tower Park , take the glass elevator 175 feet up to the observation deck and a fantastic view of the river.

Travel Peoria Routes

Interstate Highway 74 and Highway 474 connects Peoria across the Illinois. US Route 24 and US 150 connects the city to Washington . There are several state highways running through the area.

Greater Peoria Regional Airport is located near metropolitan Peoria , five major American airlines fly on this route including United Airlines and American Airlines . There are several railroads connecting the city to the rest of the country.
