The Times Square ball drop has a history which dates back to 1907. This ball is dropped from the top of a flagpole at One Times Square. Initially, the ball, which is five feet in diameter, was made from iron and wood and was 700 pounds in weight. It was decorated with 100 bulbs of power 25 watts. Later, in 1920, it was replaced by a ball of iron weighing 400 pounds. However, this ball was also replaced by an aluminium ball weighing only 150 pounds in 1955. The Times Square Ball Drop has taken place every year since 1907, except in 1942 and 1943, for the Second World War. This has been a regular event for a century and is attended by a million people every year.
