The University of New Orleans was originally called Louisiana State University in New Orleans. It was legally established by the Act 60 of the 1956 Louisiana Legislature, in the wake of a citizen's movement to bring tax-supported higher education to the metropolitan area. In September 1958, the initial classes with 1,400 students were started in a vacant aircraft hangar. This event marked the opening of the first racially integrated, public university in the South. By September 1961, the enrollment exceeded 3,000 and the school became a full four-year institution.
In September 1969, when the enrollment exceeded 10,000 the Louisiana State University in New Orleans became the second-largest university in Louisiana. In February 1974, the Board of Supervisors approved a change of name and Louisiana State University in New Orleans became University of New Orleans . By the fall of 1983, the enrollment had exceeded 16,000 and University of New Orleans had five senior colleges. Now it has become a major urban research university. The University of New Orleans is located on the south shore of Lake Pontchartain and is close to downtown New Orleans.
