Montgomery is the capital of Alabama, the U.S. state. Formed in 1819, the city was named after General Richard Montgomery. It is also the birthplace of the modern civil rights movement. The city became the fifth capital of Alabama after St. Stephens, Huntsville, Cahawba and Tuscaloosa. It has also become the first capital of the Confederate States of America. The city is now the second largest city in Alabama.
