MOBILE

Mobile is a city in the US state of Alabama. The city has derived its name from the presence of the Mobile Indians in the area at the time of founding. It was founded in 1702 as the capital of Louisiana Territory. The Treaty of Paris signed in 1763 ceded Mobile to Great Britain and the British renamed it as Fort Charlotte. Later in 1780, the Spanish captured it ad kept it till 1813 when the American General Wilkinson captured it. It was then the second largest seaport on the Gulf Coast. The city is the center of Alabama's second-largest metropolitan area.



Area & Location: Located in Mobile County, Mobile lies at the head of 27-mile -long Mobile Bay on the Gulf of Mexico. Situated at 30°40'46" Latitude North and 88°6'12" Longitude West, Mobile occupies a total area of 412.9 sq. km with 305.4 sq. km of land and 107.6 sq. km of water. It is also home to 203,564 of its inhabitants.
