Minneapolis Institute of Art is located one mile south of downtown Minneapolis and is easily accessible by Metro Transit bus. The museum has more than 80,000 objects from diverse cultural traditions which spans over a period of 5,000 years.
In the year 1883, twenty-five citizens of Minneapolis founded the Minneapolis Institute of Art with an aim to bring arts into the life of their community. The building opened its door in 1915. A neoclassical landmark of the Twin Cities, the Minneapolis Institute of Art expanded in 1974 and in 2006 the museum unveiled a new wing. The Minneapolis Institute of Art has seven curatorial areas: Africa, Oceania, and the Americas; Architecture, Design, Decorative Arts, Craft, Sculpture, Modern Sculpture, Prints and Drawings, Photographs and Textiles.
The mission of the Minneapolis Institute of Art is to achieve a national leadership in bringing arts and people together to discover, enjoy and understand the world's diverse artistic heritage.
The Institute is also the greatest art educator of the people of Minnesota. Every year more than half a million of people visit the museum.

The Purcell-Cuts House, which is a masterpiece of Prairie School architecture, is now a part of the collection of Minneapolis Institute of Art. The house is open for public on the second weekend of each month and special Holiday Tradition tours are given throughout the holiday season.
The Wells Fargo Center is a unique exhibition space which provides an open forum for the presentation of rotating exhibitions devoted to various aspects of Modernism. The works are exhibited on a rotating basis, i.e. one exhibition each year, all drawn from the museum's permanent collection.
The Minneapolis Institute of Art organizes workshops from time-to-time. ArtsConnectEd is the comprehensive educational resource of the institute which is an online database of images, information, educational tours and materials. The Art Adventure Program introduces K-6 students to works of art from a variety of cultures. The Minneapolis Institute of Art also organizes adult classes, youth and family programs, lectures, acoustic sunrise, antiques show and sale. The Museum library is free and open to public.
The Minneapolis Institute of Art is open on all days from 10-5 except on Monday. Other holidays include Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and July 4. There are no admission charges.
