West Memphis is the largest city of the Crittenden County, Arkansas, U.S. Based on the recent population estimates, it ranks as the state's 14 th largest city, just after Bentonville. It is regarded to be a part of the Memphis metropolitan area and is located directly across the Mississippi River.

The first known inhabitants of West Memphis were a tribe of Native Americans who were known as Mound Builders. However, the first European to come and settle in this part was Hernando Desoto and a group of his followers. The Crittenden County was established by an act of legislation during the year 1825 while Arkansas was still a territory. The first citizens of this area William and Robert Vance actually mapped out the plan of West Memphis. The lumber industry played a significant role in the founding of West Memphis. The town of West Memphis was incorporated in the year 1923.

The climate of West Memphis varied too often. During summers, temperatures soar up to 80ºF during the months of June and July. However, temperatures fall down below 30ºF during the winters. The winters are not very harsh but rather cool.Snowfall occurs for a long period of time and the height varies to about 1 -2 inches during the months of September and August.

West Memphis has many public and private schools. There are many elementary, middle and high school in the area. West Memphis is also home to the Mid-South Community College which provides undergraduate and graduate degrees and also has the continuing education. Apart from this, there are other colleges and centers of education as well.

The city of West Memphis is served by the West Memphis Municipal Airport and Memphis International Airport.
