University of Memphis was founded under the patronage of the General Education Bill, passed by the Tennessee Legislature in 1909. The name of the institution originally was West Tennessee State Normal School, the institution opened its door on September 12, 1912.

In the year 1925, the name of the college changed to West Tennessee State Teachers College. And finally in the year 196, the name of the college became Memphis State College. In 1950 graduate studies were started and in 1954 the school changed from a quarter to a semester system. In 1957, the state legislature designated full university status to Memphis State College. The first doctoral programs began in 1966. The 1990's were characterized by another name change, and in 1994 Memphis State University became the University of Memphis . Today it is one of Tennessee's three comprehensive doctoral-extensive institutions of higher learning. The University of Memphis awards more than 3,000 degrees annually.

The mission of the University of Memphis is to provide high quality educational experiences while pursuing new knowledge through research, artistic expression and interdisciplinary and engaged scholarship. The university offers undergraduate, graduate, masters and doctoral degree programs.

Apart from these colleges, the University of Memphis also has off-campus classes, online education facilities and professional and continuing education, which is a non-degree program.

The faculty and staff members of each of the colleges under the University of Memphis are very efficient, hardworking and helpful. There are various resources for faculty members as well. A great deal of parent participation is also encouraged by the college authorities.

Each of the colleges and schools of the University of Memphis has conference planning, campus recreation, athletics, financial aid, tiger dining, tiger copy and graphics, health center, mail services, parking services and first South tiger banking centers. The University of Memphis has an art museum, libraries, visitor information center, campus maps and research facilities.

The admission charges to the various courses of the colleges are different and you need to fill up an admission form specifying your choice of subject.
