Memphis is the largest city of the state of Tennessee. Various founders of different American music genres, including Blues, Gospel, Rock & Roll were based in Memphis. Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and B.B. King all started their music careers in Memphis in the 1950s. Many other famous musicians also kick-started their music careers in Memphis. Many famous radio stations and recording studios such as WDIA, Stax Records, Hi Records, and Sun Studios are located in Memphis. Graceland, the former home of Elvis Presley, is one of the nation's largest tourist attractions. The place where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, Lorraine Motel, located in the city has been converted into the National Civil Rights Museum.

Location: Memphis is located on the Lower Chickasaw Bluff above the Mississippi River, at the mouth of the Wolf River.

Area: The city has a total area of 763.4 square km.

Per Capita Income: The city has a per capita income of $17,838.

Age Structure: A 27.9 percent of the people of the city are under the age of 18 years. A 10.8 percent are between the ages of 18 to 24 years, while 30.7 percent are between the ages of 25 to 44 years. A 19.7 percent of the people belong to the 45 to 64 years age group, while 10.9 percent of the people are 65 years or older.

Racial Makeup: African-Americans make up quite a large chunk of the population of the city with a 61.41 percent share. Whites make up 34.41 percent of the population. Asians constitute a miniscule 1.46 percent of the population, while Native Americans have an even lesser share at 0.19 percent. A 2.97 percent of the population consists of Hispanics.

Economy: Located ideally on the Wolf River, Memphis is an important port of entry. The world's busiest cargo airport is also located here. Important markets of the city are its hardwood, lumber, cotton, and livestock markets. It is also a major manufacturing zone of textiles, heating equipment, pianos, and automobile and truck parts. The entertainment and film industry of Memphis has also had a major boost in recent years.

Climate: Memphis experiences cold winters and hot summers. Spring and fall seasons are unpredictable with severe weather, such as thunderstorms and strong winds. Summers are hot and humid with an average temperature of 81o F. Winters are very cold and experience temperatures below freezing quite often. Memphis receives sufficient rainfall. The Memphis skyline has the Sun shining for 64 percent of the year. Memphis is most beautiful during the spring months, and that is the ideal time to visit it.


Government Type:
Memphis has a Mayor-Council type of government. The city is divided into nine districts, seven of which have one representative each. Two districts have three representatives each. All administrative duties concerning day-to-day operations of the city are the responsibility of the Mayor. The City Council is the legislative body of the city and makes the laws that govern the city.
