James Madison University , founded in 1908, is a premier learning center situated in Harrisonburg, Virginia. What started off as a women's school for industrial training has now grown into a leading co-educational university. The courses offered by James Madison University are coveted throughout USA.
James Madison University was set up in 1908 by the Virginia General Assembly. Then the name of the university was State Normal and Industrial School for Women. The second change of title came about in 1914 when it was renamed State Normal School for Women. James Madison University was granted the authority to give bachelor's degrees in 1916. The university again underwent change of name in 1924. It was named the State Teachers College. Finally in 1977 it was named James Madison University and is still known by this name.
Julian Ashby Burruss was the first president of James Madison University. The first batch of students to enroll at this university was in the year 1909 and the batch consisted of two hundred and nine students, under the guidance of fifteen faculty members. The present president of James Madison University is Dr. Linwood H. Rose who took this post in 1998. Till date James Madison University has had five presidents.
For almost forty years doors of the James Madison University was exclusively opened to female students only.

It was only in 1946 that male students were also enrolled as regular day students. 1954 is another landmark year in the history of James Madison University because this was the year when the university was given the right to grant master's degree.
