Madison is the capital of Wisconsin, a state in the United States of America. Known as 'The City of Four Lakes', Madison is surrounded with Lake Mendota, Lake Monona, Lake Wingra and Lake Waubesa. The city is regarded as the fastest growing in Wisconsin and one of the fastest within the United States. It was created as a result of the purchase of over a thousand acres by James Duane Dotyin- a former federal judge in 1836. It also serves as home to the University of Wisconsin. The Milwaukee & Mississippi Railroad has been linked to Madison. Since its inception as a city in 1856, Madison grew further to become the second largest city in the state. It is also the county seat of Dane County and the neighboring Iowa and Columbia counties.
Area & Location:Madison is located in the center of Dane County in central southern Wisconsin, 77 miles west of Milwaukee and spreads 219.3 sq. km across the nation. Out of it 177.9 sq. km is covered by land and 41.5 sq. km by water. It occupies 1169.8 people per square kilometer, making the population to 221,551. The city was chosen as capital because of its location halfway between the new and growing cities around Milwaukee in the east, Prairie du Chien in the west and between the highly populated lead mining regions in the southwest and Wisconsin's oldest city, Green Bay in the northeast.

Economy: Madison's economy evolves from consumer services and high-tech base, particularly in the health, biotech and advertising sectors. The city experienced a steady economic boom in 1990s and the city's south and west sides received the maximum expansion. Many companies such as the North American division of Spectrum Brands, Alliant Energy, American Family Insurance etc have buried their roots in this soil. The Wisconsin state government and its departments such as the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, the Wisconsin Department of Corrections and the Wisconsin Attorney General are the biggest employers that yield revenue to the city. Many other businesses are also attracted to Madison because of the area's high-level education.
Tourist Attractions: Alliant Energy Center, an often venue for big-name concert groups, Henry Vilas Zoo, Little A-Merrick- Amusement Park, Kohl Center, the home of the University of Wisconsin men's and women's basketball teams and the ice hockey teams, Olbrich Botanical Gardens and many shopping malls like East Towne Mall and West Towne Mall are the points of interest in Madison. In addtion to this, the city offers a number of hotels like Doubletree Hotel Madison, Hampton Inn Madison, Best Western Inn Towner and Holiday Inn Express to its visitors.
