Lowell is a city in the U.S state of Massachusetts. The city named after Francis Cabot Lowell was incorporated as a town in 1826 and it later became a city in 1836. The city grew into a flourishing industrial center during the 19th century and by 1850, it turned out to be the second largest city in New England. Being a planned city, Lowell is the fourth largest city in the state.



Area & Location:Lies in Middlesex County at the confluence of Merrimack and Concord Rivers, Lowell is located at 42°38'22? Latitude North and 71°18'53? Longitude West. The city occupies a total area of 37.7 sq. km with 35.7 sq. km of land and 2.0 sq. km of water. The city has a population of 105,167.

Transportation: Passenger train is the main means to access the city. The Interstate 495, US Route 3, the Lowell Connector and Massachusetts Routes 3A, 110, 113 and 133 provide easy access to the city from other cities via roads.

Boston's Logan International Airport is the main airport that serves the city. Vermont Transit Lines bus service is the other public transportation system in the city.
