Lexington is a city in the U.S state of Kentucky. Founded in June 1775 in Virginia, the town of Lexington was established on May 6, 1782. By 1820, it became one of the largest and wealthiest towns west of the Allegheny Mountains and gained the nickname "Athens of the West." In 1974, it became the first municipality in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to form a consolidated city-county government. Known as the "Horse Capital of the World", it is the second-largest city in Kentucky and the 70th largest in the country.
