Lewiston Auburn College was created in response to the concern and insistence of local community leaders who stressed on the importance of having a public university in Maine. It was started in the year 1988 and then became one of the seven major academic units of the University of Southern Maine. The campus of Lewiston Auburn College has strong interdisciplinary programs and a student-centered environment. Since the time of its inception, the Lewiston Auburn College has been linked to the needs and aspirations of the greater Lewiston Auburn area.
The mission of the Lewiston Auburn College states that it is committed to being “a national leader in interdisciplinary education, to serving as a resource for the community, and to providing an outstanding educational experience for its students through degree programs that are responsive to changing cultural and workplace demands and are available to a non-traditional and diverse student body”. The college aims to increase the educational awareness of the people of Maine for meeting the challenges of the ever changing world.
The Lewiston Auburn College offers interdisciplinary baccalaureate degree in Arts and Humanities, Leadership and Organizational Studies, Natural and Applied Sciences, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Industrial Technology and Nursing.

The College offers master's degree in Leadership Studies, Literacy Education and Occupational Therapy. It offers graduate degree in Adult Education, Counselor Education, Educational Leadership and Nursing. For Lewiston Auburn College's degree programs, students must complete the Core curriculum as well as some specific courses and majors.

The faculty members of the Lewiston Auburn College are very efficient and helpful. Student enrolment has increased from just 273 students in 1990 to 1,248 in 2003. The existing building has been completed in three phases, with the final phase being completed in 2002.
The Lewiston Auburn College provides library, computer lab, bookstore and dining facilities to its students. Apart from these the Atrium Gallery is also housed in the main building. Every year at least five major art exhibitions are organized in this gallery. The Franco-American Collection is an archive of materials dedicated for preserving the local Franco-American culture and history.
