Lawrence is a city in the U.S state of Kansas. It was founded in 1854 for the New England Emigrant Aid Company, by Charles Robinson. The pro-slavery Quantrill's Raiders burned the city in 1863 killing150 citizens. The city then later developed turning these historic buildings into restaurants and boutiques. It is the river city in Douglas County and also the county seat of Douglas County.
Area & Location: Sits along the banks of both the Kaw and Wakarusa Rivers, Lawrence is located at 38°57'36? Latitude North and 95°15'12? Longitude West. The city, which is 25 miles west of Kansas City and 20 miles east of Topeka covers a total area of a total area of 74.3 sq. km with 72.8 sq. km of land and 1.5 sq. km of water. It has a population of 80,098, making it the sixth largest city in Kansas.
