Lahaina is the largest town in Maui County in Hawaii with an area of 18.1 sq.km. Lahaina HI is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hawaii. Lahaina HI was known a major whaling port in the 19 th century. Lahaina HI is located between the breathtaking hills of Hawaii and the spectacular ocean. Lahaina HI is a lively vacation spot and has a relatively low cost of living as compared to the rest of Maui.

Early History of Lahaina HI

Lahaina HI was earlier the capital of the high ali'i of Maui. The legendary Kamehameha conquered the town of Lahaina in 1795. His successors set up their base in Lahaina in the period between 1820 and 1840. It was then known as the Royal Capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom. In the 1820s, Lahaina became a popular port for Whaling Ships. In 1824, Christian Missionaries set up schools in Lahaina to educate the natives. Hawaii was eventually annexed by the US in 1898.

In the 2000 US Census, the population of Lahaina HI was about 9,118 and the population density was 612.3 persons per sq.km.

The population was constituted of 43.40% Asians, 26.44% White Americans, 0.34% African American and the rest are made up of Native American, Pacific Islander and other races. 0.06% of the population were of Hispanic origin. There were 108.2 males for every 100 females. The average income household income, per family, as per figures in 2005 was estimated to be $79,876. Lahaina HI residents have a per capita income of $29,921. Of the total population, 7.8% were seen to be significantly below the poverty line.
