Jacksonville is a city in the U.S state of Florida. The settlement in Cowford as earlier known began in the year 1791 and the city received its present name in 1822 in honor of Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory. In 1821, Florida became a territory of the United States. The city grew rapidly and was chosen by the voters to consolidate the city and county governments in 1968. Thus Jacksonville was made the largest city in land area in United States. It is now the county seat of Duval County.



Area & Location: Located in the First Coast region of northeast Florida, Jacksonville lies on the banks of the St. Johns River. The city is situated at 30°19'10? Latitude North and 81°39'36? Longitude West. It occupies a total area of 2,264.5 sq. km with 1,962.4 sq. km of land and 302.1 sq. km of water. Around 782,623 people reside in the city with a density of 441.58per sq. km making it the eleventh largest city in the world.

The city has an extensive road network that include Interstate 95 and several bridges like Dames Point Bridge, the Mathews Bridge, the Isaiah D. Hart Bridge, the Main Street Bridge, the Acosta Bridge, the Fuller Warren Bridge and the Buckman Bridge that connect the city with other places.
