Jackson State University , founded in 1877, is the premier university situated in the capital city of Jackson in Mississippi. Jackson State University was founded in 1877 as Natchez Seminary by the American Baptist Home Mission society. The main mission behind the setting up of the Jackson State University was to provide moral, religious and intellectual education to the colored races of Mississippi and of the areas surrounding it. Natchez Seminary changed its name to Jackson College in the year 1899. Much later in 1940 the administration of this university went to the state of Mississippi and Jackson College became an important training center for teachers. Finally in 1979 Jackson College was awarded the status of the Urban University of the State of Mississippi. At present Jackson State University is a public co-educational institution that imparts quality to education to budding business leaders. The University runs on student fees, federal and private grants.
