Indianapolis is the state capital of Indiana and also the seat of Marion County. Spread over 371.8 sq miles (963 sq. km.), Indianapolis is the largest and the most densely populated city of Indiana. According to the estimates in 2005, Indianapolis has a population of approximately 784,118.
The city of Indianapolis has a large metropolitan area that includes Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Morgan, and Shelby counties. The city was founded around 1821 near the White River area. It was during this period, that it was declared the state capital for Indiana. Later in the 20th century Indianapolis grew into a developed city. Since then, Indianapolis is undergoing many progressive and reformatory projects in order to acquire a new developed form and build a new image.
