Mass Transit: Houston's bus system is operated by the Metropolitan Transit Authority. It provides transportation by buses, trolleys, and lift vans. The METRO light rail began operation in Houston on January 1, 2004. The rail track is only about 8 miles long. Taxis: Houston has the second largest taxicab fleet in the country, with more than 1,400 taxicabs registered with city authorities.
