Honolulu International Airport is often the springboard for many Hawaiian dream tours. This Oahu Island airport is just nine miles from the spectacular Waikiki Beach area and just four miles away from downtown Honolulu. The airport is home to more than 19 major domestic and international airlines. Hawaiian Airlines and Aloha Airlines have selected this Airport as their headquarters.
Established in 1927, the airport is considered a public airport and is efficiently controlled by Hawaii's Department of Transportation. This unique airport in Honolulu incorporates four airstrips. The chief landing strip is known as the 'Reef Runway' and is unique in its off-shore construction and its use by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). The Airport also includes two sea airstrips used for seaplanes.
This airport is designed with three terminal buildings: the Commuter Terminal, Inter-island Terminal and Main Overseas Terminal. Chance RT-52 buses, which run on the Wiki Wiki route, transport travelers between terminals. The "Wiki Wiki route" was also the inspiration for the term “wiki,” popularized by the collaborative encyclopedia Wikipedia.
The inter-island terminal primarily provides service through Aloha Airlines and Hawaiian Airways to the other islands of Hawaii.
