Since Hilo is a popular tourist Destination on the Kona side of Hawaii, there are many flights to Hilo from all over the US and the rest of the world. Local flights to Hilo can land at the Hilo International Airport , which is located 2.7 miles from the Hilo City Center. The other local airport is the Molokai Airport in Hoolehua, which is located 152.5 miles from Hilo. There are also three international airports in the area where flights to Hilo can land their passengers. These are the Big Island International Airport at Keahole in Kona, which is located 60.5 miles from Hilo; the Kahului Airport in Maui located 118.9 miles from Hilo and the Oahu International Airport in Honolulu that is located 215 miles from Hilo.

  • The Kona Big Island International Airport at Keahole is built on 3,450 acres of land. The Airport is responsible for handling air traffic from domestic, international, inter-island, commuter or air taxi sectors and other generic flights and air traffic. The Airport boasts of an 11,000-foot runway and a well equipped terminal offering passengers many facilities and conveniences. The Airport houses air cargo and mail carriers, provides airport support, and handles generic aviation operations. The Airport is located near the expansive Queen Kaahumanu Highway.
    There is an access from the Highway which runs near the Airport terminal.The access road forms a one way traffic loop which surrounds the various Airport facilities, like the public vehicle parking and the Car Rental facilities. There is another Airport complex nearby, housing additional facilities. The area is used mainly by the local Car Rental agencies for returns, general vehicle maintenance, and storage purposes.

  • The Hilo International Airport was earlier known as General Lyman Field. The Airport occupies an area of 1,391 acres and is located two miles to the east of Hilo's City Center. The airport has a primary runway measuring 9,800 feet long. The runway is utilized mainly for air carrier operations. The second Crosswind Runway measures 5,600 feet long and is used mostly for general aviation operations. The passenger terminal complex, which also includes passenger commuting facilities, is located to the south of the airport. The terminal is connected by an access roadway from the Kekuanaoa Avenue. General aviation facilities are placed along the side of the second crosswind runway, which is also served by the terminal access roadway. The Airport also offers convenient parking for transient military aircraft.
