Frankfort is the capital city of the state of Kentucky. Located in Franklin County, the area is 38.9 sq.km. Frankfort KY was originally on the north side of the Kentucky River. It later expanded to include the areas of Leestown and South Frankfort. Frankfort KY has grown considerably since the 1960s. Franklin KY has a sister city in the Dominican Republic called San Pedro de Macorís.
Early History of Frankfort KY
English explorers first came to this area in 1751. The earliest settlements in the area date back to late 18 th century. Frankfort gets its name from Stephen Frank, a settler who was killed in an Indian attack, at a crossing which came to be known as Frank's Ford. The town was officially established in 1786 as Frankfort, Virginia. It became the capital of the newly established state of Kentucky in 1792.
