Durango Train




Durango Train is a historic coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive. You can enjoy the sights and sounds of yesteryear on the Durango train as it winds through 46 miles of the San Juan

National Forest to the old mining town of Silverton, Colorado. The Durango train and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are considered as a National Historic Landmark.

The Denver & Rio Grande Railway appeared in Durango on August 5, 1881. By the end of July 1882, the tracks to Silverton were completed and the trains began transporting both passengers and freight. Since then, the Durango train has been in operation for the past 126 years. The whole community commemorates the setting up of the unique railroad and Durango train throughout the year with various events like Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railfest and Day Out with Thomas Tank Engine.

The price of a ticket on the Durango train includes admission to the Railroad Museum, which brings to life the heritage of railroading in the Rockies through its remarkable collection of the memorabilia, rare photos and full-size locomotives.

The Durango train primarily has 4 types of seating options which are:
  • Vintage Coach
  • First Class Parlor Car
  • Open-Air Gondola
  • Silver Vista
Apart from these the train also has wheelchair accessible coaches.

The Durango train has special packages for the summer and winter seasons. During the summer, you may choose a standard classes, premium motor coach, grande class, parlor class, vista class, presidential class, combo trips, premium-class combo and presidential class combo. All these separate classes are meant for people of varied ages and have separate charges. For instance, grande class is meant for people of at least 12 years of age and costs $89 per head and presidential class is meant for people of 21 years and costs $149. During winters you can enjoy the cascade canyon winter train which travels 52 miles through the backcountry winter wonderland of the San Juan Mountains. The tickets would cost $49 for adults and $29 for children.

While traveling on the Durango train , one is advised to dress in layers of clothing and carry sunglasses to protect eyes from cinders in the air. While abroad, no animals or smoking is allowed. The tickets must be booked two weeks prior to the trip. In case of cancellation of tickets, one has to pay $14 per aduklt and 467 per child. In case of seat change, one needs to pay $6 per seat.
