Durango Train is a historic coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive. You can enjoy the sights and sounds of yesteryear on the Durango train as it winds through 46 miles of the San Juan National Forest to the old mining town of Silverton, Colorado. The Durango train and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are considered as a National Historic Landmark.
The Denver & Rio Grande Railway appeared in Durango on August 5, 1881. By the end of July 1882, the tracks to Silverton were completed and the trains began transporting both passengers and freight. Since then, the Durango train has been in operation for the past 126 years. The whole community commemorates the setting up of the unique railroad and Durango train throughout the year with various events like Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railfest and Day Out with Thomas Tank Engine.
The price of a ticket on the Durango train includes admission to the Railroad Museum, which brings to life the heritage of railroading in the Rockies through its remarkable collection of the memorabilia, rare photos and full-size locomotives.
