Durango is one of the major states of Mexico. Durango City is the capital of the state of Durango. It has Mexico's second-newest population. Francisco de Ibarra was the first person who colonized Durango. He settled in this northern province of Nueza Vizcaya in 1563, and named the place after his native town in Biscay, Spain. Spanish colonists became highly attracted towards the state of Durango because of its mining and grazing areas. Durango became a separate state in 1823 after the Mexican revolutionary victory over Spain.
The Sierra Madre Occidental is a mountain range which is located on the western part of the state of Durango. This mountain range has a wide range of minerals. The principal occupations of the people of Durango include farming, lumbering and ranching.
