The University of Dubuque is a premier four year private institution in Dubuque which lies under the order of the Presbyterian Church . The University had its humble beginnings in 1852 under the guidance of Rev. Adrian Van Vliet and has today emerged as the numero-uno choice of students in Dubuque. The University can today boast of a huge student population of around 1100 and it offers them with both graduate and post-graduate programs. The University of Dubuque has been accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and also in addition by the Council on Aviation Accreditation, the State of Iowa Department of Education and by the Association of Theological Schools in North America.

The University had been formed with an honest aim of providing the German immigrants with ministers of gospel for the new communities that they were in the process of forming. This honest decision to provide the downtrodden with training gradually turned into an exercise for providing education to the youth. The school was started as Van Vliet's own child but by 1870 the Presbyterian Church took control of the institution and in 1872 the school changed its address to 17 th street occupying the place for the coming 35 years. The school had finally been entrusted with a permanent position on University Avenue in 1907 and only then did it head for a complete transformation constructing other buildings like the Administration Building,

Severance Hall, Van Vliet Hall, University Bookstore and McCormick gymnasium within its premises.

From an all men's institution the college changed status to a co-educational institution only in 1911. Today the University of Dubuque maintains a very high athletic standard and it has also been incorporated as a member of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Besides being beyond par most colleges in athletics, the University is also a reputed institution for education. The education that the college offers is broadly categorized under 4 main schools like: The School of Business which provides students with education in fields like Business Administration and Computer Information systems; under the School of Liberal Arts the following courses are offered: Communication, Natural and Applied sciences, English, Philosophy, Psychology, Religion and Sociology. The School of Professional Programs offers courses in Flight Operations, Teacher Education, Nursing, Aviation Management and Physical Education. There is also an additional course offered in Theological Seminary.

The University is expanding each year and new buildings are being constructed, however the major problem that it now faces is rise of smoking amongst its students. The University has taken some drastic steps recently to curb this problem and has met with satisfactory results.
