Detroit Institute of Arts , commonly known as DIA , is the prestigious center for preserving the arts of various civilizations. Founded in 1885, Detroit Institute of Arts has been the storehouse of culture for Detroit for more than a century. A visit to DIA is every art enthusiast's dream and aspiration.

The history of Detroit Institute of Arts has passed several important milestones. DIA was founded under the name of Detroit Museum of Arts which was later changed to the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1919. Originally the museum was located on Jefferson Avenue, but soon a bigger building was required to accommodate its ever expanding collection of artifacts and paintings. So the DIA moved to a larger campus on Woodward Avenue which is its present address.

The Detroit Institute of Arts is a colossal building that covers nearly 600,000 square feet of area. The museum houses more than hundred galleries, a large auditorium that can accommodate twelve hundred people at a time, a recital hall, a library, a modern laboratory for conservation and preservation purpose, a shop selling artifacts, and café. All in all the Detroit Institute of Arts is a complete community on its own.

The Detroit Institute of Arts is a paradise for all art-lovers. The museum houses countless objects of art that are priceless both in terms of their value as well as antiquity. A special feature of the DIA is the diversity of its collection. DIA is the proud owner of an amazing collection of Van Gogh paintings.

Vincent van Gogh's Self Portrait in DIA is the first Van Gogh painting to enter an American museum.In 2000 DIA held a one-of-its-kind exhibition on Van Gogh named Van Gogh: Face to Face in association with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.This incredible exhibition showcased some of the exquisite paintings of Van Gogh and it attracted a record number of visitors, almost 315,000.
