Dallas is the second largest city of the state of Texas and the eighth largest in the United States. Dallas and its surrounding area is mostly flat and lies at an elevation ranging from 450 to 550 feet. The Trinity River passes by downtown Dallas. White Rock Lake is another one of Dallas’ major water bodies. Over 400 corporate headquarters are located in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Area: The city has a total area of 997.1 square km.

Population: According to an estimate of 2005, Dallas has a population of 1.2 million people.

Age Structure: A total of 26.6 percent of the population of Dallas are under the age of 18. Another 11.8 percent of the population is between 18 to 24 years of age. A 35.3 percent of the population is between the ages of 25 to 44, while 17.7 percent of the population are between 45 to 64 years of age. The 65 years or above age group accounts for 8.6 percent of the population.

Racial Makeup: African-Americans make up 25.55 percent of the population. Asians account for 2.68 percent of the population, while Native Americans make up 0.29 percent of the population. Hispanics account for 35.61 percent of the population, while Caucasians constitute 34.6 percent of the population.
Economy: The Dallas/Fort Worth area is a leader in high technology industries. The computers that are manufactured here have given it the nickname of "Silicon Prairie". Dallas is the center of commercial, industrial, and financial industries. Its major manufacturing industries include aerospace and electronic equipment, cosmetics, textiles, aircraft, automobiles, and transportation equipment. It also has a vibrant publishing and printing industry.

Climate : Dallas lies in the southern part of the Tornado Alley that runs through Midwest USA. In the spring, heavy storms are seen in Dallas, accompanied by hail, lightning, and sometimes tornadoes. The climate of Dallas is classified as humid subtropical. Summers are hot with temperatures frequently exceeding 100° F. Dallas also gets hot and dry winds from the north and west during summers. In the winters, cold winds blow causing occasional sub zero temperatures. There is very little snowfall; usually only occurring a day or two each winter. October and April are the best months to visit Dallas because of the mild weather.

Rainfall: Dallas has an annual rainfall of 33 inches (856 mm).

Government Type: Dallas has a Mayor-City Council form of government. The Mayor is the chief elected officer, and presiding leader of the city. There are 14 council districts from each of which a council member is elected. The Mayor and City Council constitute the legislative organs of the city. The Mayor and City Council appoint the City Manager, City Attorney, City Auditor, and other public officials.
