The Old North Church is the oldest religious structure in Boston. It was built in the year 1723. It has a special significance for the people of Boston. It was on a dark night of the year 1775 that Paul Revere waited for a signal from the church to warn him about the arrival of the British troops.
The signal was that the church sexton would hang one lantern from the steeple if the British troops arrived by land and two lanterns if they arrived by sea. The church hung two lanterns. Paul Revere then rode through the countryside at midnight to wake up the people and warn them of the troops' arrival. Every year in the month of April, the members of the colonial militia hold a lantern service to commemorate the event.
