The police department of Boston, officially known as the Boston Police Department (BPD) is the oldest police department of USA. It formally started working in 1838, after the General Court sanctioned a bill for the establishment of the police department of Boston city. The department follows the model that was developed for the London Police force by Sir Robert Peele.
Mission of Boston Police Department
The mission of Boston Police Department is to dedicate themselves for fighting crime, reducing fear among the locals and to work for the betterment of the society as a whole. In order to fulfill the mission, B.P.D. has taken several measures like:
- The Police Headquarters was shifted to One Schroeder Plaza by updating and centralizing many administrative and investigative functions.
- Various scientific tools are used for investigating crime.
- National Night Out events are celebrated to increase community participation in the prevention of crime.
- Same Cop / Same Neighborhood is a program to encourage officers to solve problems on street.

Divisions of Boston Police Department
Some of the divisions of Boston Police Department are:
- Media Relations furnishes public information to local and national media by conducting news conferences and interviews.
- The Boston Police Department Crime Laboratory Unit analyzes the various crimes by implementing Forensic Technology.
- The Family Justice Division of the Boston Police Department has three units: Domestic Violence Unit,
- Sexual Assault Unit and the Crimes Against Children Unit.
- The Boston Police Harbor Unit patrols the Boston harbor daily to maintain the safety of the place for both commercial and recreational use.
- The Internal Affairs Division of Boston Police Department inquires if there are any complains against the police officials.
In the year1997, the Boston Police Department shifted its headquarters from 154 Berkeley Street to Ruggles and Tremont streets in Lower Roxbury. It was a significant step in the history of the Boston Police Department, as the new headquarters is much well-equipped offering all types of modern facilities.
