Mayor of Boston


The city government of Boston is regulated by the Boston Municipality. The head of the municipal government in Boston is the Mayor of Boston. The official tenure of the mayor is four-years. The Mayor comes to the power by the process of plurality voting. The first Mayor in Boston was John Phillips, elected in 1822. The election of Mayor of Boston is conducted every two years.

The Mayor of Boston is vested with extended executive powers. Among the many duties of Mayor of Boston, he has the prime responsibility to choose the president of
the City Council. Some one among the councilors is elected as the president.The school committee for the Boston Public Schools is also appointed by the Boston Mayor. The Mayor appoints the ruling head for the Boston Redevelopment Authority and the Zoning Board of Appeals, who share the responsibility for land-use planning with the Mayor.

The present mayor Thomas Menino is serving his fourth term as a Mayor of Boston. He has introduced many public safety initiatives, crime control, emergency facilities, electrical availability and many more welfare measures in the city.
