Boston Marathon is recorded as one of the oldest annual road racing events in the history of the world. For the first time, the event of Boston Marathon was held in 1897. Since then, it is organized every year on the third Monday in the month of April on Patriot's Day. It is said that this annual event got its inspiration from the success of the marathon competition of the Summer Olympics of 1896. Nearly 20,000 people from all across the world take part every year in the Marathon of Boston. These runners comprise both the amateur and professional sports persons. At present, this annual event is organized by Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.).

The runners have to run through the 26 miles of steep terrain of New England amidst the unfavorable weather. The participants need to attain 18 years of age before the date of this event to gain permission to run in this race. The interested runners are required to register with B.A.A. for gaining the permission to participate in this event. They also need to produce experience certificates of earlier participation in a marathon event with a particular qualifying timing record.
B.A.A. takes care of all the amenities of the spectators and runners in Boston Marathon event. The cash prizes are awarded to the first three rankers in this race. A commemorative medallion is also awarded to each of the finishers of the race. The 2008 Boston Marathon is scheduled to be held on 21st April, 2008.
