The anesthesia was used for the first time before the general public in an operation at Ether Dome in downtown Boston. This operating room is positioned in the 4th floor of Massachusetts General Hospital in the Bulfinch Building. On 16th October, 1846 the Boston dentist, William Thomas Green Morton demonstrated to the public in Ether Dome that ether was a potential anesthetic for surgical purpose. Nowadays, the medical presentations and conferences are held in the interiors of Ether Dome. It is thus visited by a big number of medical practitioners from all across the world every year. to Ether Dome. The Ether Dome has been specially designed for the public display. The inner space of this room is quite airy. The daylight enters the room through the upper portion and light up the room brightly. There are many artifacts and relics, which help the visitors to understand the usage of ether as an anesthetic. The room is also decorated with a painting portraying the historic surgery in Ether Dome. An Egyptian mummy has also been placed in the room, which proves quite beneficial for the medical students. One more relic to adorn this room of Ether Dome is the marble statue of Apollo.
This historically significant building of Ether Dome has been lately registered as a National Historic Landmark.
