The first Whaler hull was produced by Richard T. "Dick" Fisher and C. Raymond Hunt in the year 1956. The Boston Whaler was one of the manufacturers of the toughest boats for use in the coastal areas of New England. These boats have been purchased by coast guard officials all throughout the world. They are also used for sport fishing, runabout, and water skiing. The Boston Whaler boats were initially built in Massachusetts but now they are made in Edgewater, Florida. The company is presently owned by Brunswick Corporation in Illinois.
The Boston Whalers are available normally in the following categories:
- Sport— they are very affordable, have low maintenance, unsinkable and have a guaranteed hull. They can be used as a yacht tender, runabout, utility boat and backwater fishing boat. There are mainly four types—110 Tender, 110 Sport, 130 Sport and 150 Sport.
- Montauk — they have conservative lines, shallow draft and solid, stable hulls. They are carefree boats which will keep going on. There are mainly three types—150 Montauk, 170 Montauk and 190 Montauk.
