Early History of Bangor
The area was earlier known as Kenduskeag Plantation in erstwhile Massachusetts. Reverend Seth Noble promoted the area in 1791 as Sunbury town. However it was more popularly known as Bangor after Noble's favorite hymn.
Bangor was officially registered as city in 1834. The 19th century saw Bangor as the hub of the timber industry and it was reputed to be the richest city in the world. Bawdy sailors named Bangor as the "Devil's Half Acre" after more illicit pursuits in the area. The city suffered major damages in the Great Fire of 1911. However the city prospered once again to become a center of industry.
