Austin is the capital of the US state of Texas. It is the fourth largest city in Texas and the sixteenth largest in the US. The city has an area of about 770 square kilometer. About 700000 people reside in this hi-tech city. It is also called the silicon hills because major technological companies are located here. Geography:
The eastern part of the city is flat. The western part has a hilly landscape, which forms the Texas hill country. The hills are primarily made of limestone. Austin has three man made lakes namely the Town Lake, Lake Austin, and Lake Walter E Long each on the Colorado River. Thunderstorms and Flash Floods are quite common in this area.
Climate:
Austin experiences hot summers and mild winters. It receives about 40 inches of rainfall throughout the year. In summers the temperatures can rise to 38 degrees Celsius. In winter the temperature may fall below 7 degree Celsius. Severe thunderstorms are experienced during spring.
