Austin is the capital of the US state of Texas. Austin is the fourth largest city in Texas and the 16th largest city in the United States. Austin is situated on the Colorado River and there are three man-made lakes within the city limits - Town Lake, Lake Austin, and Lake Walter E. Long. Austin also calls itself the "Live Music Capital of the World." This is because it has more music venues per capita than any other US city. Numerous night clubs are located on 6th Street and an annual music festival known as South by SouthWest is celebrated widely in the city.

Racial Makeup: Austin has a considerable White population, which is 65.36 percent

of the total population. African-Americans account for 10.05 percent of the people, while Native Americans account for 0.59 percent of the population. Asians make up 4.72 percent of the population, while 30.55 percent of the people are Hispanics. Other races account for 16.23 percent of the population.

Economy:Austin is the commercial center of a large ranching, poultry, dairy, cotton, and grain producing area. It is also a convention center of the world and an academic center. Austin and its suburbs have a large concentration of high technology industries. It has become a leading Computer Hardware and software producing zone. The presence of a large number of high-tech industries in this area has given it the name "the Silicon Hills." Other products that it manufactures are jewelry, medical equipment, consumer goods, electronics, and wood products. The defense industries of Austin are also a major area of its economy.
Climate: The climate of Austin can be described as the subtropical type of climate. In the summer months, temperatures are quite moderate. In winters, the temperatures are well above sub zero. The winter temperatures seldom drop lower than 38o F. The months from May to September are the rainiest, most humid period. Spring and fall are mild and pleasant. They are also the best times to visit the city.

Austin has a Mayor-City Council type of government. The Austin City Council has seven members - one Mayor and six council members. The entire Council is elected at large by the voters of the city.
