Augusta is the capital of the U.S state of Maine. It was incorporated as part of the town called Hallowell in 1771. Its name was changed to "Augusta" in the month of August in 1797. It was chosen as the state capital in 1827 and was chartered as a city in 1849.

Being the easternmost state capital in the United States, the city occupies a total area of 150.9 sq. km with 143.4 sq. km of land and 7.5 sq. km of water.
