The area where Atlanta and its suburbs were built was originally a part of Creek and Cherokee Native American territory. Atlanta's progressive civil rights made it increasingly popular and the city got populated with African Americans by the year 1972. The fall of Atlanta in the Civil War was a critical point and led to the re-election of Abraham Lincoln. The city gradually emerged from the ashes.
