Annapolis is the capital of the U.S state of Maryland. A settlement named Providence was founded in 1649. In 1694, after Sir Francis Nicholson moved the capital of the royal colony, the town was named Annapolis in honor of Princess Anne. It was incorporated as a city in 1708. After the Treaty of Paris in 1783, Annapolis became the temporary capital of the U.S. It is the county seat of Anne Arundel County and home of the U.S Naval Academy.
Area & Location: Located on the Severn River, the city lies between 38°58'23? Latitude North and 76°30'4? Longitude West. The city covers a total area of 19.7 sq. km with 17.4 sq. km of land and 2.3 sq. km of water. It has a population of 36,217 with a density of 2,056 per sq. km.
