Anchorage is a city in the US state of Alaska. Though the city was planned in 1914 as a railroad construction port, the city was incorporated on November 23, 1920. On the same year, US government gave up its direct control over the city. By 1940, the city began to develop further resulting in the construction of Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson. This made Anchorage a major defense center. It is also the seat of power for the business community.

Area & Location: Located on the South central Alaska, the city is bordered on three sides by Cook Inlet and on the east by Chugach Mountains. Lies between 61º13'06? Latitude North and 149º53'57? Longitude West, Anchorage occupies a total area of 5,079.2 sq. km with 4,395.8 sq. km of land and 683.4 sq. km of water. It has an elevation of 115m. Around 272, 687 people reside in the city with a density of 62 per sq. km making it the largest city in the state.
